Predicting the Effects of Federal Reserve Policy in a Sticky-Price Model: An Analytical Approach*
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, I characterize equilibria for a sticky-price model in which Federal Reserve policy is an interest-rate rule similar to that described in Taylor (1993). For standard preferences and technologies used in the literature, the model predicts that the nominal interest rate is negatively serially correlated, and that shocks to interest rates imply a potentially large but short-lived response in output. Shocks to government spending and technology lead to persistent changes in output but the percentage change in output is predicted to be smaller than the percentage changes in spending or technology. I compare the model’s predictions to data using innovations backed out from estimated processes for interest rates, government spending, and technology shocks. These comparisons confirm the theoretical findings. In response to observed changes in government spending and technology, the model predicts a path for output that is much smoother than the data and much smoother than that predicted by non-sticky price models. *McGrattan, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Inflation Targets , Credibility , and Persistence In a Simple Sticky - Price Framework by Jeremy Rudd Federal Reserve Board
This paper presents a re-formulated version of a canonical sticky-price model that has been extended to account for variations over time in the central bank’s inflation target. We derive a closed-form solution for the model, and analyze its properties under various parameter values. The model is used to explore topics relating to the effects of disinflationary monetary policies and inflation pe...
متن کاملRates , Inflation , and Federal Reserve Policy Since 1980
This paper characterizes Federal Reserve policy since 1980 as one that actively manages short-term nominal interest rates in order to control inflation and evaluates this policy using a dynamic, stochastic, sticky-price model of the United States economy. The results show that the Fed’s policy insulates aggregate output from the effects of exogenous demand-side disturbances and, by calling for ...

متن کاملSticky-Price Models and the Natural Rate Hypothesis
A major criticism of standard specifications of price adjustment in business cycle models for monetary policy is that they violate the natural rate hypothesis by allowing output to differ from potential in steady state. In this paper we estimate a dynamic optimizing business cycle model whose price-setting behavior satisfies the natural rate hypothesis. The price-adjustment specifications we co...
متن کاملModelling the Heterogeneous Price Setting Behavior of Firms (DSGE Approach)
Despite the empirical evidence of the difference in the degree of price stickiness of goods and services, in the new standard Keynesian models, the same price stickiness is considered for all firms producing intermediate goods. In recent years, a new generation of pricing models has been introduced to simulate the heterogeneous price setting behavior in which, unlike standard pricing models, th...
